At times in our lives we can feel as though we are stuck in a cycle of behaviour or thinking that appears to take control over us and leave us feeling that change is beyond our grasp.
We often feel that our destructive behaviour is part of us, too difficult to challenge or change and therefore our attitude can lead us to become dissatisfied with ourselves, leaving us feeling unhappy with who we are. We form habits over time that can rule the way we live. For example, if you are a smoker, frequently overeat, or have an irrational fear or phobia, these issues will dictate the way you live and impact upon the way you feel.
Sometimes we feel powerless to change, at other times we may experience a moment of empowerment- telling ourselves we will stop this behaviour, but cannot find the strength to see this through. Often it can seem easier to stick with what we know and we think change is too difficult, or almost impossible!
Yet, we know we were not born with these fears, phobias or habits. We have developed these for a reason, maybe you had a childhood experience that cemented a fear. Maybe during a difficult period, you found comfort in a habit. Perhaps now you find your behaviour is restricting your life. Whatever it is that is impacting upon your ability to be happy and healthy, you can take control and make positive changes.
Hypnotherapy can enable positive change and break down these destructive fears, habits, phobias and behaviour.
How does Hypnotherapy Work?
Hypnotherapy works by creating a state of deep relaxation that enables access to the subconscious part of your mind. Your subconscious mind stores an enormous amount of information and emotion, areas which you will probably have little or no conscious knowledge.
However, these subconscious beliefs or ideas can still cause your conscious mind to think and react in the way it does and dictate your behaviour. Sometimes there is conflict between the way different parts of your mind see the world, and this can lead to problems. To give an example: smoking.
The conscious mind wants to stop smoking and knows all the health, cost and lifestyle benefits. However, the subconscious mind has attached a good feeling to smoking, as well as negative feelings to stopping, and the subconscious mind overrides the conscious logic. The conscious critical factor separates the two parts of the mind. The conscious critical factor constantly monitors information and rejects an idea or concept which it does not agree with, because previous experience taught it to accept it as valid. Hypnosis helps us bypass the conscious critical factor and reach the subconscious to affect change.
Information about our Hypnotherapist
Susan trained as a Hypnotherapist at the Institute of Clinical Hypnosis in 2004 at Kings College, London. She is also a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor and a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. (BACP)
She is also Co-founder and Co-director of the Oxford Counselling Centre.
Susan offers one to one sessions and workshops. These are always tailored to the needs of the individual and/or group. Susan can provide hypnotherapy for many areas, including smoking cessation, confidence boosting, sleep problems and phobias.
She works in an integrative way using many different approaches; person centered hypnotherapy, behaviour therapy, CBT and schema therapy.

Here are a list of answers to questions you may have about hypnotherapy in general or the service we provide.
You will not be made to do anything you do not want to. This is not like stage hypnosis. Hypnotherapy for Change is a therapeutic process and the therapist will always adhere to the ethical standards of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).
It is difficult to give a clear indication of the amount of sessions you will need without undergoing the initial assessment.
In general, habits, fears and phobias can be treated within 1 to 6 sessions. For example, smoking cessation can be achieved with the majority of smokers within 1 – 2 sessions. The amount of sessions will depend upon the severity of the issue and your willingness to change.
Absolutely! Hypnosis is a natural state that we experience daily. You may recognise the feeling of not being quite asleep and yet not awake, in a state of dozing off. This is similar to the hypnosis experience.
You are certainly able to go into hypnosis- the key is that you must have the willingness to change.
Hypnotherapy is not advised for those who have experienced psychotic episodes or who are currently addicted to non-prescription drugs. Other forms of treatment are available for those who are unable to undergo hypnotherapy, please contact us for further information.

An individual session is priced at £45 for 1 hour. You may need multiple sessions, this will be discussed in the telephone assessment.

While we are confident that hypnotherapy will help you to change your habits, get over your fear etc, no therapeutic process can be 100% guaranteed. Factors such as willingness to change will play a part, as will future events beyond the hypnotherapist’s control. Therefore, we cannot offer any refunds. Though we are confident that you will not even need to ask!
